about

This song poured out of me after the death of Jack Hardy, one of my strongest songwriting mentors. Jack was Irish, so, this sort of went that direction.
I find it hard talking about death with my son. I keep betraying what I actually feel, in one way or another. First time we talked about it, he was three. He saw me crying after McCoy Tyner died.
“Why are you crying?”
“Because he's gone.”
"He's Gone???"
“Yes.  But a part of him is still here, (touching my heart), in everyone he touched.”
Later in bed, Elio pointed at my heart,
“There are tiny pieces of McCoy Tyner inside you", and I realized he was imagining physical pieces!
Ok, let's try this again...But yes, they are still by our side.

lyrics

At the crimson edge of morning
As the dew dries from the blade
Hear the rasping voice
Of a broken bell
Ringing in the day,
Just ringing in the day.
And the floods of spring meander
Through the breaking ice of the bay
And the nest is built
High up on the sill
And there three blue eggs lay,
And there three blue eggs lay.

And you're by my side
You are still by my side
Though you're gone,
You're still by my side

As the great blue cloak of evening
Covers the streets and the quays
Hear the keening wind
through the signal wires
and the distant murmuring waves
As the hunger moon is waning
Darkness starts to fade
Hear the rasping voice
Of a broken bell
Ringing in the day,
Just ringing in the day

And you're by my side
You are still by my side
Though you're gone, you're still
By my side
And you're by our side
You are still by our side
Though you're gone, you're still
By our side, by our side
By our side, by our side
