about

A torch song for a pandemic winter. Dark, but offered with love. Released on the equinox, when we move to spring. The song was recorded on a Bechstein piano which was taken from the home of a dispossessed Jewish family in Berlin in 1941, and sold downriver to Switzerland. When the owner found out I had some Jewish heritage, she gave me it free. I hear the piano's ghosts. I originally wrote the song on another haunted piano: The Steinway where John Lennon wrote Imagine. But that's another story.

lyrics

Force of nature in your wrinkled brow
Black eyes shallow barely see me now
You recognize me, even know my name
But the leaf fell before the color changed

Winter garden the petals frozen

The timing is really off
Bringing ashes to a baby shower
Mark the big day on a calendar
Flip a nickel and choose the hour
Ignoring the starling cawing

Coriander
You stand so still
Wind is howling but you stand still
You are scattered
the great divider

Any day now away we go
Any day now away we go

After everything that you've been through
everyone's forgotten you
The one's you saved from loneliness
the one's who suckled at your breast

Clean sheets in a sunny room
Stewing slowly in your own perfume
And the rattling of the speaker cone
And the certainty that you'll die alone

In the city that never sleeps
Tonight you will be released
