We need secular songs of comfort at the end of life! I wrote this for my mom's best friend Jeanne. She was ready to die, had stopped eating, was taking no medication...but her body clung to life.

Resonating with her situation, I found myself at an old grand piano in a big empty church. An almost forgotten melody and chord progression I'd discovered as a teenager came back into my hands, and as I felt Jeanne's struggle, words manifested.

I was glad to be able to send the song to her. Her hospice nurse said she asked for it a few times before she died. I'm hoping "You're Going Home" will make its way to people who don't know if they believe in heaven (or know they don't) but are filled with wonder at the vast, interconnected mysteries of our universe.
